Tallahassee Pushes For Stricter Seat Belt Laws
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―
Tallahassee lawmakers made another attempt to make Florida's seat belt law a primary offense Thursday.
Currently, the state's seat belt law is considered a secondary offense for operators and passengers 18 and older.
A secondary offense means that law enforcement officers can't pull you over for not wearing a seat belt. You can only be ticketed if you're stopped for another reason.
The bill is the latest attempt to change the law.
There are currently 22 states in the country that have a primary seat belt law.
The bill, which has been proposed for years, cleared its first hurdle in this latest legislative process.
The House Economic Expansion & Infrastructure Council approved the bill by a 6-2 vote.
