FMU Guard On Leave After Pulling Gun On Students

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) ― A private security guard has been placed on leave after he flashed a gun at students at Florida Memorial University during a scuffle Monday.

FMU students armed with cameras caught the action on tape.

It all began when campus security officers asked Emory Mitchell for ID. When he allegedly refused to show the officers any ID, Mitchell allegedly got into a shoving match with the campus cops who cornered him in a bathroom. Students who felt they had to defend their friend, kicked the bathroom door in, clipping one of the guards.

That's when a near riot broke out. On the shaky video shot by students, you can see one of the guards waving a gun at students as they screamed and pushed.

"Everyone was frustrated; everyone was angry, everybody was screaming and yelling telling them to get out of the bathroom," said student Taneashia Toussaint.

She says was Mitchell was cornered by himself with three other officers, and all she could hear was kicking and thumping through the door. A disheveled Mitchell eventually came out of the bathroom in handcuffs with the guards.

"The man that pulled out the gun, like he pointed it, and they were making it seem like we were a threat to him, and we really weren't a threat to them," said a student who only wanted to use the name 'Star'.

Other students say violence on campus is escalating.

"I think over the course of this week, there were like four fights, I believe," said student Christopher Lang. "Somebody actually got tossed into the lagoon; it's getting really hectic out here."

Part of a press release issued by FMU reads: "We regret that the student assaulted the private security officer, but are pleased that no one--including the student suspect--was injured."

Mitchell is charged with aggravated assault. The private security officer has been placed on administrative leave.
