Lottery Vending Machines Coming To South Florida

All 1,000 Should Be In Place Across The State By Mid-October

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― Pretty soon you may not have to wait at the Customer Service counter at your local Publix or Winn Dixie if you want to by Florida Lottery scratch off tickets.

Two weeks ago, the lottery department started rolling out vending machines that will dispense scratch off tickets at one thousand retail locations. The Tampa and Ft. Myers areas were the first to receive the machines, Miami-Dade and Broward's machines could be up and running by Monday. Lottery officials hope to have all one thousand vending machines in place across the state by mid-October.

This is not the first time the lottery department has tried to use vending machines to sell tickets. The first time lasted from 1997 to 2001; it was stopped because the machines were losing money and then-Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed their funding.

Last year the lottery contributed a record $1.28 billion to state education, according to CBS4 news partners The Miami Herald.

Lottery officials say this time they expect the machines to net an annual profit of $3.4 million due to better placement and management. All will get prime spots in grocery stores.
