Seminole Gambling Deal Under Fire In Senate
TALLAHASSEE (AP) ―
Senate leaders want to rewrite the gambling compact that Governor Charlie Crist signed with the Seminole Indian Tribe last month.
Both the Senate and House say Crist overstepped his authority when he entered into the agreement with the Seminoles.
A hearing on a lawsuit filed by both chambers of the Legislature is scheduled to be heard next month before the Florida Supreme Court.
Under the compact signed by Crist, the Seminole Indians will have exclusive rights to both Class Two and Class Three slot machines outside of Miami-Dade and Broward counties, as well as games such as blackjack and baccarat. The 25-year deal will mean a minimum of $100 million a year for the state.
