Gas prices have been averaging $3.12 in Illinois and have dropped below $2 average nationwide.

It was just three months ago that drivers were excited to fill up at a Chevron Station in Davie for $3.19 a gallon. Today, the average for a self-serve gallon is about $2.00.
Fay Morgan tells
CBS4's Jim Robinson, "That's going to be good for me, I'll save money." Others were saving their hard earned cash at the Shell Station at the corner of Sunrise and Powerline. A price for gas there is $2.01.
At the Sunoco across the street it's a $1.99. The low price brought Roland Dolviel to the pump. She says, "I'm very happy, very happy, I'm saving money to use for my kids.".
Another driver at the same Sunoco is happy to see the price drop.
"Everyone is real happy about it, but I think the bigger question is why did it go so low," said John Hartman.
Others want to know why dropping prices change spending habits. Hartman says, most likely no. He told
CBS4's Jim Robinson, "Obviously gas is a necessity, so there's nothing you can really change as far as your day to day activities"
While a break from the pump is welcome, Roland Dolviel isn't exactly promising more gifts under her tree.
CBS4's Jim Robinson asks, "Maybe a merrier Christmas?" Dolviel replies, "I don't know about that."
