Doctor Sentenced To Jail For HIV-Medicare Scam
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Yet another scandal has surfaced in the healthcare system. Miami physician, Dr. Roberto Rodriguez, 54, was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison after admitting to fraudulently prescribing HIV therapy for Medicare patients who didn't need or receive the treatment.
U.S. District Judge Paul Huck ordered Rodriguez to put more than $9 million back in the hands of Medicare. Rodriguez was co-owner of Midway Medical Center and director of other local HIV infusion clinics. Records show that he and five convicted co-conspirators recruited patients and paid them off while using records to con Medicare.
Rodriguez attested to the claim that his clinics had submitted more than $20 million in false claims to Medicare from October 2003 to February 2005.
Dr. Carmen del Cueto, another physician involved in the hullabaloo, is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
