An Orlando man is charged with attempted murder; and a college student from Fort Lauderdale is lucky to be alive after a pre-game stabbing Monday night at Land Shark stadium.
John Langsett, 24, a student at Florida Atlantic University, was stabbed in the neck and the chest, police say, during a confrontation with a ticket scalper. Fifty-one-year old Hamin Basim Ansar was trying to sell tickets just outside the stadium prior to the Dolphins game with the New York Jets when Langsett approached him. Something Langsett said apparently set the ticket scalper off.
"I got into an argument with the guy over the tickets and he pulled a knife and stabbed me," Langsett told CBS4's Gary Nelson Tuesday. "He came at me, and we got into a scuffle and he stabbed me. I was thinking I couldn't believe I got stabbed at a Dolphins game."
Langsett suffered a deep wound in the back of his neck and another in the left side of his chest. He was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, and released midday Tuesday. Miami Gardens police Sergeant William Bamford told CBS4 News that Langsett was fortunate not to have been killed. "Had it not been for this young man's physical stature - he's a strong young man, a weight lifter it appeared - that knife might have pierced his heart."
Langsett was grateful for the skilled work of doctors at Ryder Trauma. "I'm pretty lucky," he said. "I'm fortunate that I'm still here."
Police credited fellow fans for coming to Langsett's rescue. "They saw what happened, and after this gentleman stabs our victim, they got in, got him surrounded, and held him until the police came. Officers were on the scene almost immediately," Sgt. Bamford said.
Police typically make several arrests at major events at Land Shark stadium. Miami-Dade police made eight arrests Monday night. The most serious, other than the stabbing, was a case of battery on a police officer. Most of the other arrests stemmed from alcohol-induced disorderly conduct.
Police no longer make arrests for ticket scalping. The legislature legalized the practice in 2006. Land Shark stadium policy, however, forbids the sale of anything on stadium property without prior approval from management.
Langsett recuperated at his Fort Lauderdale home Tuesday and searched for some good news in his story. "The Dolphins won. I'm pretty happy about that," he said. "I missed a great game."
An arrest report from the Miami Gardens police department says the ticket scalper, Ansar, admitted to stabbing his would-be customer. The report does not specify a motive. A Miami-Dade circuit judge ordered Ansar held on $25,000 bond.
