LAUDERDALE LAKES (CBS4) ― Amid the traffic commotion created by a gas giveaway in Broward County Friday, one homeless family was left out from getting the gas they desperately need to get by, but radio station officials finally got a hold of them

CBS4's Ted Scouten was able to locate the Hines family, after Hot 105 listeners had been on the lookout for them all weekend long. Mom, dad and kids, ages 5, 4 and two months-old, were recently burned out of their home and have been living in their van. They tried to get a free tank of gas during the promotion but missed out.

The line for the giveaway stretched several blocks as many drivers looked for any relief from the seemingly never-ending rise in gas prices.

Eventually, the station had to give out tickets to the group to return to the gas station between 12 and 2 p.m. because traffic around the station was at a standstill, but ironically the person who was the first in line, Andre Hines—who arguably needed it the most—couldn't get any. Hines and his family were burned out of their apartment and need the gas to keep their home moving.

"I haven't eaten in three days, my wife hasn't eaten in a couple of days. This is really important," Hines said.

Topping it all off – Andre has terminal cancer and is nearly on borrowed time already.

All total, the station gave away more than 4,000 gallons of gas, but now that Hines's family was located, they are getting a little extra help from the station.

"I was hoping some kind of way, before I leave this world, I could leave my wife and kids something," said Hines as he cried. "That's all the matters  you know what I mean."

Miami's Reverend Richard Dunn has arranged for the family to stay in a hotel while they wait to get homeless assistance. The radio station managed to get the children to summer camp, and listeners called in donating whatever they can, including a job for their mom.
