Broward Students Pull Family From SUV After Crash

Students & Coach From Hollywood Hills

They Saved Family of 3, Including A Toddler, When SUV Careened Into Canal

CLEWISTON (CBS4) ― A Flagler Beach woman who was rescued by a group of Broward high school football players after her SUV crashed into a canal has died in a Ft. Myers hospital.

The Hollywood Hills High School players and their coach were driving home from a football competition in Tampa on Sunday night along U.S. 27 when they were flagged down by a man waving for help just outside of Clewiston.

A Nissan SUV had flipped into a nearby canal and the occupants needed help to get out. The four players and their coach, Scott Barnwell, quickly jumped into the water and rescued the Flagler Beach couple inside the sinking SUV and also rescued their 2-year old granddaughter. The child was secured in a car seat in the back.

Juanita Bryan, 53, was rushed to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers in critical condition on Monday. Her husband has been identified as James Bryan. The child's name was not released. On Tuesday, Juanita died from her extensive injuries.

Coach Barnwell was traveling with players Jared Maldonado, Alvin Arnold, Clarence Murphy and Anthony Yerou. The players and coach were assisted in the rescue by the man who flagged them down and another passerby.

Police say the SUV was apparently traveling too fast when it hit standing water, slid off the highway and flipped over into the canal, which trapped the passengers.
