PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) ―
A farm dedicated to rescue and rehabilitating abused and sick horses and other animals needs the public's help to keep running, as the demand for help continues to grow.
The FRIENDS Ranch (Florida Research Institute for Equine Nurturing Development and Safety) currently has 50 sick horses in its care, along with pygmy goats, miniature donkeys and peacocks. This number appears to be growing, and so is its debt. None of the employees there are paid and the center runs entirely on personal and corporate contributions.
The non-profit agency takes in horses diagnosed with equine infectious anemia (EIA), a condition similar to human hepatitis, but it only affects horses. These horses have to be either quarantined or put down. FRIENDS cares for these horses and gives opportunities for charities and organizations such as the Cub Scouts to enjoy the animals.
Debby Beye-Barwick, who runs the non-profit told the Miami Herald, ``We'd like to continue to offer these programs for free.''
But if they don't get thousands of dollars worth or relief, they many not be able to stay open much longer.
