Dump Your Trash Before Storm Season Strikes

Hurricane Info On CBS4.COM

Hurricane Season Officially Begins June 1

It Ends Nov. 30
MIAMI-DADE (CBS4) ― When it starts to rain in South Florida, it usually means hurricane season is just around the corner. The 2009 hurricane season officially starts in a little more than two weeks but are you ready?

One easy way to get ready now, before a storm threatens, is to get rid of unwanted trash. The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management says residents can get rid of household trash, bulky items, and tree cuttings at one of 13 Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers located throughout Miami-Dade County.

These sites are open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Here is a list of the Trash and Recycling Center addresses:

  • North Dade, 21500 NW 47 Avenue
  • Norwood, 19901 NW 7 Avenue
  • Palm Springs North, 7870 NW 178 Street
  • Golden Glades, 140 NW 160 Street
  • West Little River, 1830 NW 79 Street
  • Snapper Creek, 2200 SW 117 Avenue
  • Sunset Kendall, 8000 SW 107 Avenue
  • Chapman Field, 13600 SW 60 Avenue
  • Richmond Heights, 14050 Boggs Drive
  • West Perrine, 16651 SW 107 Avenue
  • Eureka Drive 9401 SW 184 Street
  • South Miami Heights, 20800 SW 117 Court
  • Moody Drive, 12970 SW 268 Street

Residents can also utilize their free bulky waste pickup service. The Department will collect up to 25 cubic yards of household trash, yard waste and other bulky items twice per fiscal year (October 1 through September 30). Before placing items at the curbside for collection, residents must schedule a pickup by calling 311, the County's Answer Center, or by requesting a pickup online at www.miamidade.gov/dswm.

"We encourage residents to complete tree pruning and other cleanup activities before hurricane season begins", said Kathleen Woods-Richardson, Director of the Department of Solid Waste Management. "Residents that schedule a bulky waste collection when a hurricane threat is imminent may not receive this service prior to the storm", added Woods-Richardson.

The Department of Solid Waste Management provides curbside waste collection and recycling services to single-family residents in the unincorporated service area and the cities of Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Sunny Isles Beach and Sweetwater.

All areas in Broward County participate except for Pembroke Pines, Pompano Beach, Parkland and Hallandale

Here is the list of drop of locations and hours in Broward County:

  • 2780 N Powerline Road, Pompano Beach
  • 5490 Reese Road, Davie
