Anti-War Protests And Memorials Across America
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
From Washington DC, and around the nation there were protests on Wednesday over the war in Iraq, when five years ago, Americans watched as the US military lit up the skyline in Iraq.
Within three weeks, Baghdad fell. Weeks later, Pres. Bush declared victory from an aircraft carrier. "In the battle of Iraq the United States and our allies have prevailed," Pres. Bush said.
In time, Americans didn't find any weapons of mass destruction, only Saddam Hussein.
As Iraq put on trial and eventually hung Hussein, America's image took a hit with photographs of US soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners.
There were however historic moments, as well, when millions of Iraqis voted in free elections.
But a daily insurgency grabbed the headlines. Thousand of troops were dying. Pres. Bush sent more troops to confront the insurgency, a move he announced today was working.
"It has opened the door to major strategic victory in the broader war on terror," the president said.
While the president remains focused on finishing the job, democratic presidential candidates differ.
Sen. Barack Obama said, "The lesson in Iraq is when we are making decisions about matters as grave as war, we need a policy rooting in reason and fact. Not ideology and politics."
Sen. Hillary Clinton said, "And the soldiers from across this great state need a commander-in-chief who will end the war in Iraq and bring them home."
