Newly appointed Broward County School Board Member Kevin Tynan was sworn-in Tuesday at a ceremony in Fort Lauderdale.
Last week, Gov. Charlie Crist appointed Tynan after his predecessor Beverly Gallagher was suspended on corruption charges after allegedly accepting money from undercover FBI agents posing as contractors.
Tynan, 50, is a member of the South Broward Hospital District Board and former chairman of the Broward Republican Party. On Tuesday afternoon, Tynan added School Board Member to his resume as he was sworn in at the K.C. Wright Administration Building in Fort Lauderdale at 12:15 p.m.
After the ceremony he attended his first official school board meeting.
"For seven years, Kevin has devoted his legal career to the ethics field, and his experience will be invaluable to the school board," Governor Crist said. "I am grateful that he will continue to serve his community with the highest of standards."
Tynan has been an attorney with Richardson and Tynan since 2001. Previously, he practiced with Entin, Margules and Della Ferra from 2000 to 2001. He served as staff counsel for the Florida Bar from 1988 to 2000, including managing disciplinary proceedings involving ethics issues. He has served on the Board of Commissioners, South Broward Hospital District, since 2002. He received his bachelor's degree from Barry University and a law degree from Nova Center for the Study of Law.
The seat that had been held by Gallagher covers southwest Broward, including Miramar and Pembroke Pines.
Gallagher, 51, pleaded not guilty in September after being arrested as part of a corruption sting that also resulted in the arrests of suspended Broward County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion and former Miramar City Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman in separate cases.
Gallagher is accused of extortion, bribery and wire fraud for allegedly accepting $12,500 from FBI agents who posed as consultants for contractors who were trying to break into the school district's construction business.
Her next court date has been set for November 20th.
