MIAMI (CBS4) ― The Knight Foundation wants to give out millions of dollars to artists with ideas to boost South Florida's art scene, which will in turn help our economy, so they created a contest.

"I have been doing a lot of painting and watercolors," said Naomi Fisher, last year's contest winner, to CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

She showed the world the sights of South Florida through her artwork. "I want to go to different locations across south Florida that have a beautiful tropical environment," said Fisher inside her studio space in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood.

And what Fisher does in those environments is performance art. She puts real people in real places. She entered this idea in a contest last year and was one of 32 winners.

"I had two ideas; I was really proud of and they both won," said Fisher, whose other winning idea was to create a space for other South Florida artists to exhibit their work.

"Artists need a grassroots space where we can invite people whose art work we are excited about to have exhibitions," said Fisher.

She also explained why we should all care about boosting the art scene in South Florida. "If we have a job, we are able to generate other things that will bring things here," said Fisher.

A perfect example as to why we should care is the art shows in town that bring tens of thousands of tourists and their money. The Knight Arts Challenge wants to continue the momentum by allocating at least $4 million for the best artistic ideas.

"We basically want it to be a transformative idea; we want something to be a game changer for this community," said Dennis Scholl, Interim Program Director for the Knights Foundation.

And after all, Fisher's idea was a game changer for everyone.

"It changed my life, and it could change someone else's," she said.

Last year, the Knight Foundation selected 32 winners and gave out $8 million dollars in grants.
