Plantation Car Chase Suspect Jumps In Canal

Suspect Jumped Off At Pine Island Rd. & 595

PLANTATION (CBS4) ― Scott Sherman faced three choices: surrender, run or swim.

He decided to swim.

He didn't get very far, however, and in minutes the 39-year-old Oakland Park man walked out of the Broward County canal along I-595 and surrendered to Lauderhill Police.

The story begins just after 4 p.m. in Lauderhill. Police say they received several calls from drivers who saw Sherman fighting with his girlfriend in a white truck and refusing to let her out.

Lauderhill Police began a pursuit. Sherman is accused of trying to hit several police vehicles during the pursuit.

"(The girlfriend) did attempt to jump out of the vehicle and that alarmed the officer and the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, and the vehicle refused to stop," Assistant Police Chief John Rhames told CBS4's Carey Codd.

The pursuit led police through several Broward County cities. It ended in Plantation where police say Sherman caused a three car crash just north of State Road 84 on Pine Island Road during rush hour.

Sherman then got out of his car and jumped in the canal.

Stephanie Wiggins was on her way home after teaching when a car slammed into her. The next thing she knew, Sherman ran past her car.

"He jumped out of his car and flew by my car," she said. "And he jumped into the water."

He jumped into the canal, which is about 15-20 feet deep and has been known to have alligators lurking nearby. Sherman swam for a few minutes, then tired and swam to shore. When he walked out of the water, his hands were behind his back, ready for handcuffs.

"My understanding is that after we apprehended him and took him back to the vehicle, one of his statements was, this cost you a lot of paperwork now," said Assistant Police Chief Rhames. "He laughed about it, and took it as a joke."

It's no joke, though. Police told CBS4 Sherman faces charges of false imprisonment, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and numerous driving citations. Police also say Sherman was driving with a suspended license and has two warrants for his arrest on drug charges. He will be booked at the Broward County Jail.

Fortunately, police say no one involved in any of the incidents was seriously injured.
