The campaign to bring the Florida Marlins a new ballpark in South Florida has stalled again.
Votes by Miami and Miami-Dade commissioners that could lead to the new stadium have been delayed, in part because of the holiday season and Tuesday's presidential inauguration.
City and county officials are now expected to vote on the issue next month.
When Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria began making plans for a new ballpark, the target opening date was 2005.
Since their first game in 1993, the Marlins have played at Dolphin Stadium, which is also where the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes play football. The Marlins hope to begin play in 2011 in the new 37,000-seat stadium on the site of the now-demolished Orange Bowl in Little Havana. It's a major piece of a public works package known as the mega-plan.
The mega-plan project includes construction of the new $515 million, retractable roof stadium for the Marlins. It also includes plans for a park at Bicentennial Park, the payoff of a large construction debt at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and possibly the creation of a streetcar system.
