Dade School Board Sues State For Lost Revenues
The Miami-Dade School Board Said It's Not Getting Correct Revenue Allocations From Local Taxes
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The Miami-Dade School Board voted Wednesday to sue the state over improper allocation of revenues collected from local taxes in the hopes it may collect up to $34.7-million in lost funding.
Miami-Dade School superintendent Alberto Carvalho urged the board to vote to sue the state, saying the state should make up the difference. He added that it would relieve the burden on local taxpayers.
The bulk of the money the district hopes to recoup comes from a change in local property taxes, one of two funding methods for public schools. The other method is the state sales tax.
''When local property taxes decline, the state has a responsibility to make up the difference with state dollars to ensure equity in education funding for all children,'' Carvalho said.
The formula determines the amount of property tax funding each school district receives, and with declining property values in Miami-Dade County, funding declined as well, costing the district close to $25-million.
