The Freedom Tower in Miami has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez announced the designation Friday in Washington, D.C. The Florida Republican says many Cubans have come to recognize the tower as a symbol of their freedom in the U.S.
Federal officials used the tower in 1962 to provide services to political refugees arriving from Cuba.
The Freedom Tower is a marvel not only for its rich history and structural beauty, but also for what it embodies for so many in our country - freedom, liberty and opportunity, Martinez said.
The tower was completed in 1925. It originally served as the headquarters and printing facility for the Miami News & Metropolis newspaper.
The Secretary of the Interior has designated 2,500 sites as National Historic Landmarks for their significance to U.S. history and culture.
