Police: Red Light Runner Slams Into Cop

Miami Gardens Officer Was Hit Then Careened Through Fence Before Hitting A/C Unit On Side Of A House

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) ― A Miami Gardens police officer, and two other people are recovering following an early morning crash in Miami Gardens. Police say a woman ran a red light and slammed into the officer's car while he was on routine patrol.

The crash happened on Northwest 47th Avenue and 191st Street at about 1:00 a.m. According to a witness, a woman driving an SUV did not stop when she came to a flashing red light. She slammed into the officer who was driving through a yellow blinking light.

After the SUV hit the patrol car, the officer careened through a fence and finally came to a stop when he crashed into an air conditioning unit on the side of a house.

"The officer was coming, he did not slow down, probably going 45 or 50, I don't know. It was really fast and they hit each other. The girl came up to the light, they didn't completely slow down, they honked their horn and they hit each other," said one witness.

An elderly couple and their adult son were inside the home at the time. Nobody in the house was hurt.

The officer, the SUV driver and her passenger were all taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with injuries. The officer's injuries appear to be minor and he's under observation.

The condition of the SUV driver and her passenger are unknown.

Charges are pending against the SUV driver.
