Video Catches MIA Workers Using Disabled Parking

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBS4) ― Surveillance video has captured hundreds of Miami International Airport workers apparently using handicapped parking spaces, throughout a period of weeks, despite being able bodies.

County Inspector General Chris Mazzella says he found that most workers justified their disabled permits by alleging not being able to walk more than 200 feet without assistance. However, video caught many of these employees—mostly from airlines—walking long distances and even carrying baggage with them.

In one video you see an employee fixing his car, and walking about, all as he's parked in the disabled parking. In another, you see a different employee washing her car, also while in one of the parking spaces.

Not only is this a misuse of the parking spots, but the spaces were used for free by the employees.

"In this case we have instances where employees did not pay, and as a result the county lost in 2007 over $1.5 dollars," said Mazzella.

Mazzella declined to name any of the workers involved because a follow-up investigation is underway into how these employees got the potentially fraudulent permits.

The investigation begun when other airport workers became suspicious of the activity and contacted the inspector general's office to conduct surveillance.
