Office Of Miami Dade's Inspector General
A Miami International Airport baggage screener has been arrested in connection with a parking scheme.
Authorities believe Bernard Forbes lied to get a disabled-parking permit and used it more than 130 times for free parking. The parking was worth a total of $2,300.
Forbes is charged with grand theft, cheating and making a false or misleading statement to obtain a disabled permit.
In April, County Inspector General Chris Mazzella released surveillance video of Miami International Airport workers apparently using handicapped parking spaces, throughout a period of weeks, despite being able to walk.
Mazzella said he found that most workers justified their disabled permits by alleging not being able to walk more than 200 feet without assistance. However, video caught many of these employees, mostly from airlines, walking long distances and even carrying baggage with them.
The investigation began when other airport workers became suspicious of the activity and contacted the inspector general's office to conduct surveillance.
