High-Tech Body Scanners Go On-Line At MIA
Passenger Imager Machines Can "See" Underneath Clothing
Can Detect Weapons & Explosives Without Physical Contact
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Miami International Airport is going extremely high-tech in its efforts to keep passengers and planes safe and secure for travelers.
Two X-Ray Body Scanners, also called "Passenger Imager" machines, went on-line Monday.
The passenger imaging technology enables Transportation Security Administration officers to detect weapons, explosives and other metallic and non-metallic threat items without physical contact, in a matter of seconds.
The machine passes electromagnetic waves over a passengers' body which creates an image that looks like a fuzzy negative. Screeners look at this fuzzy negative picture to see what's underneath passengers' clothing.
The TSA will have a total of 120 "Passenger Imager" machines in use by next year, including the two at Miami International Airport.
In addition to the X-Ray Body Scanners, the TSA is also launching additional use of "Advanced Technology" X-Ray scanners to check carry-on bags. This type of scanner gives security officers a better look at what's in carry-on baggage and has the potential to speed up the security process because fewer bag checks will be required.
Several checkpoints at MIA already have the advanced technology x-rays, with the first deployed on June 15.
