Mosque Sees 2nd Vandalism Attack In A Year

(CBS4) For the second time in a year a West Kendall mosque has been vandalized and members of the congregation are making calls on the FBI to investigate.

Vandals targeted the Islamic School of Miami, located at Southwest 147th Avenue and 117th Street, over the weekend, smashing two of the building's windows but falling short of going inside. The incident either occurred late Friday or early Saturday, when no one was inside the mosque. Members say it's a trend that is upsetting.

Six months ago the mosque was sprayed with 51 bullets that also left broken windows and holes in the building's dome.

Members didn't make the discovery until Tuesday because the windows are located in a rear storage room of the building.

Summer school was out this week at the school, and Mohammed Zakaria is glad the children didn't have to see the signs of hate up close.

"This is what they have done," said Zakaria. "I don't know what they gained from it."

The damage left pieces of glass sprayed over the supplies the Muslim community routinely hands out to Miami's homeless.

"We don't need to vandalize places of worship where people are here to worship God, in whatever form the worship him in," said Zakaria.

The Imam is convinced the attacks are fueled by blind prejudice.

"I think this has to do with the Mideast, but we all have to live together."

Miami-Dade Police are investigating the incident.
