Worker Charged With Taking Over $100,000

Check On Contractor Licenses, Call the Fla. Department of Business and Professional Regulation At (850) 487-1395

MIAMI (CBS4) ― An unlicensed contractor, Michael Adkins, 51, was taken into custody Thursday by the Miami-Dade Police Department's Unlicensed Contractor Unit, charged with grand theft for taking over a hundred thousand dollars in deposit money from tenants and a condo association in Miami Beach, claiming he would install hurricane shutters on their property, but never did.

"It was never an intent to take anyone's money. I didn't take any money, it went into a corporate account. Everyone knows what happened to the shutter business," Adkins said.

The unit's investigation claimed that between April and November of 2006, Michael Adkins of Roll-Tek Industries, Inc entered into a written contract with a condominium association and thirty-one tenants.  He reportedly agreed to furnish and install hurricane shutters at their property, and deposited checks but never began the work.

Errol Rosen, a resident at 9 Island Avenue, said he gave Adkins a $5,000 check.  "I'm happy he's arrested."  Another resident , Michael  Hart, said "I thought he was doing business with our association, and that they had substantiated that he was a legitimate business."

According to the police authorities, the checks were deposited in Adkins' business accounts, totaling $122,053.30.

Investigators said Adkins was not licensed in Miami-Dade County or The State of Florida, and will be charged with contracting without a license and grand theft.

Adkins says he will fight the charges against him.
