Gables Officer Makes An Investment In Our Future

MIAMI (CBS4) ― On his day off from work as a Coral Gables Police officer, Mike Hearns could be relaxing. Instead he is out on the field at Myrtle Grove Elementary School, doing what he loves best, teaching children kids how to play soccer. For a few weeks during summer vacation, Officer Hearns trades in his uniform, for his coach's hat.

Coach Hearns and his partner run the Quest Soccer Camp. So when his wife told him about the need for sports equipment at the school, they decided that besides just donating soccer balls and some equipment, they would start a soccer program.

"They're energetic, as you can see," said Hearns. "They really can take it to the sport. They're athletic; they're kids, and can really have fun."

And what's a soccer team without the proper uniforms?

Thanks to a donation from Junior Premier Sport, all 45 kids get brand new soccer uniforms, and from this perhaps a future soccer star will be born.

"I learned how to dribble, kick and pass," said Hubert Fussell.

For the school's PE teacher, seeing the smiles and excitement on his students' faces, as they learn something new, is priceless, especially since the school has not been able to buy or replace much of the sports equipment because of the budget cuts. He only hopes the generosity seen today inspires more of the community.

"It's fantastic," said Coach Kidd. "It's one of those things that you can't thank people enough. I mean to have an experience like that with my kids--in an inner city school. I mean, for police officers and people to donate their time and their experience--which is great--it really means a lot."

Perhaps Coach Mike said it best: "Our youth is our future. If we don't take car of our future, who is going to take care of us?"
