MIRAMAR (CBS4) ―
It happened three times last week at Broward County schools. Police slapped cuffs on three students for carrying or using a gun on campus.
The latest incident occurred at Miramar High School last Thursday, when a 16-year-old male student set off alarm bells by acting strange and clutching his book bag tight.
When a school police officer questioned the student, according to a Miramar Police Report, the student said, "I have drugs and a weapon in my book bag." Inside the bag, police found a Glock, a loaded magazine with 8 hollow point bullets and 6 plastic baggies with suspected marijuana inside.
The student was arrested and charged with possession of firearm on school property and possession of a controlled substance within a thousand feet of a school. The teen says he bought the gun on the Miramar streets for $100. He told police he needed the Glock for protection. The teen told police he sold marijuana to students on the street directly behind Miramar High School.
The report states: "In addition, he stated that he knowingly brought the firearm to school on this date, to avoid his parents finding it in his residence."
The arrest stunned one Miramar High School student. "That's messed up," junior Leah Banos said. "They shouldn't be bringing guns to school because this is a educational environment."
This teen's arrest came just one day after Ft. Lauderdale police charged 15-year-old Teah Wimberly with shooting and killing Amanda Collette on the Dillard High School campus.
And one day later Ft. Lauderdale police arrested an 8-year-old for carrying a loaded pistol on the campus of Walker Elementary School.
This is a disturbing trend. According to state education officials from October 2007 to October 2008 there were more than 500 weapons found on Broward County school campuses.
