Thousands Turn Back The Dark With "Night Out"

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

Neighborhoods throughout South Florida and thousands of communities nationwide took part in the 25th annual National Night Out Against Crime Tuesday night, including many neighborhoods in South Florida.

Residents from Homestead to Hialeah locked their doors, turned on outside lights and spent time outside with neighbors and police, meeting neighbors, having cookputs, and generally showing they were not afraid to leave their home and enjoy their neighborhoods.

National Night Out is designed to heighten awareness of crime and drug prevention, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out is an annual event, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, which takes place on the first Tuesday in August.

The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from 9,500 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.
