North Miami Beach is among the growing list of South Florida cities to add red light cameras to their intersections.
The system allows cities to photograph the license plates of red light runners. The city estimates the revenue from fines will boost city coffers by $250,000 annually.
"This is tremendously useful technology that is designed to help curtail going through red lights by careless drivers, and at the same time, reduce the potential for automobile accidents, and provide greater safety to our citizens," said City Manager Kelvin L. Baker in a written statement.
The cameras will be installed at three locations including the entrance to the Golden Glades Interchange where I-95, Florida's Turnpike and the Palmetto Expressway meet.
The intersection at North Miami Beach Blvd. and NE 10th Ave. is already equipped with the technology, but the city's police department is giving drivers a 90-day warning period with no fines for those caught.
The cameras will operate 24-hours a day. Warning signs alert drivers that cameras are posted.
American Traffic Solutions, Inc. is the company that is overseeing the technology and will send violations to the police department, which is tasked with approving and issuing citations.
More than 400 cities across the nation use cameras as a traffic safety tool.
Other South Florida cities now using red-light cameras include Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Homestead, Hollywood and Aventura.
