North Miami police continue to investigate a police involved shooting that left a man dead and an officer injured.
According to police, an officer from the Robbery Intervention Detail claims he came across a man in an alley behind a beauty salon at 728 NE 128th Street around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Investigators aren't exactly sure what happened after that but they do say there was a physical confrontation and shots were fired. A man that asked not to be identified said he was walking with Garcia to the laundry mat next to the beauty salon, when the shooting took place.
"And then after that he got shot," said the man.
The officer was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Family members of the victim have identified the dead man as 19-year old Garcia Beaugris. He's the father of a one-year-old boy and they say he loved basketball and music.
His family and neighbors are in shock. His sister arrived at the scene and was too emotional and upset to talk to the media. Family members also told
CBS4's Evan Bacon that the victim lived in an apartment complex behind the crime scene.
Garcia's brother, Eddie Beaugris, said he watched it all happen from their driveway.
"He is just very soft spoken, sweet kid," said Sue Barr a neighbor. 'Three loud pops and I happen to be seeing out my window and I just saw the flashes."
A small memorial for Gacia is set up right next to the building where the laundry mat is. Garcia's family and neighbors said they are frustrated because of a lack of an explanation by police. Police say they are investigating and will have more details Friday afternoon.
