Police Use "Bait" Cars To Hook A Piranha

Oakland Park Police Are Using Decoy Cars To Catch Car Thieves

OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) ―

Oakland Park deputies have been using message boards to alert motorists to the problem of widespread car burglaries in their area, and that decoy vehicles are on the street to lure those committing auto robberies.

Undercover Broward Sheriff Office deputies have been strategically placed throughout Oakland Park focused on apprehending people intent on breaking into a car. The decoy vehicles, with valuable items left in full view, are used to capture any in-progress robberies.

BSO Oakland Park District Chief John Bukata told CBS4 Ted Scouten that, "I want to keep thieves wondering if the next person that they are about to victimize is an undercover sheriff's deputy."

But this sting operation has also served to teach auto owners some lessons that they often fail to put in practice. At local L.A. Fitness gym we caught up with some women who left their purses in plain sight on the passenger's seat. This equates to setting yourself up for the quick theft of your belongings.

Bukata  added that there has been a 7.7 percent increase in break-ins from 2006 (558 cases) to 2007 (601 cases).

Motorists are reminded when leaving their vehicle to always lock their car doors and never leave items such as purses, cell phones, wallets, laptops and other valuables in plain view. As far as GPS devices goes, you should not only remove it from plain sight, but you should wash off the rings left on your glass by its suction cups.
