Opa-Locka Carjacking-Abduction Suspect Is Arrested

OPA-LOCKA (CBS4) ― The carjacker accused of taking off with a woman's van while two children were still inside has been arrested.

Friday Opa-Locka Police announced the arrest of 24 year-old David Joseph Brogdon. CBS4's Peter D'Oench spoke to the lead investigator in Opa-Locka, and he told him the man they arrested was known as a carjacker. He was the key suspect in the abduction of the children because of his record, and he was tied to that case today after police say he tried to steal another car. His mother is absolutely stunned.

"That's not him," said the woman, who didn't want to give her name. "That's not something he would do. That's stone crazy."

She can't believe her son is capable of committing Monday's notorious, 90-minute carjacking.

Police say Brogdon is the man seen on this surveillance videotape, who stole a car with two boys in it, including a 2-year-old child—a 50-block ride that police say terrified them.

"That's crazy, I don't think he would ever do something to hurt someone,"  said his mother.

Police say Brogdon was arrested Friday after he stole a man's car---a man who followed him.

"He jumped in the car, and drove off with the vehicle, being  followed by the victim in another vehicle. The whole time he was on the phone with police….until Brogdon crashed the vehicle," said Corporal Gerardo Delosrios, the lead investigator in the case.

The victim restrained Brogdon until police arrived. The lead investigator says Brogdon confessed to taking Beverly Ferguson's vehicle after she parked it at a store with her children inside it.

"During the course of the investigation he confessed that he did jump in the van with the children, but he didn't know they were in the van," he said.

"He said he was worried there were so many police around, he didn't want to stop with the children."

Brogdon had been a suspect in the children's abduction because police say he was charged with grand theft for stealing a car a month ago. His arrest was cause for celebration on the 4th of July at an Opa-Locka park.

"Obviously we're excited; it means if you commit crimes like this in Opa-Locka we are coming after you," said Opa-Lock Mayor Joseph Kelley.

Beverly Ferguson took her children to some fireworks for Independence Day, and indicated she would comment tomorrow.

Brogdon is charged with Grand Theft and Kidnapping, and faces a court appearance in the morning.
