No Bond For Suspected Opa-Locka Carjacker
OPA-LOCKA (CBS4) ―
A man accused of in last week's carjacking of a van with two children inside will remain behind bars.
Saturday a judge denied bond for 24-year old David Brogdon.
Opa-Locka Police arrested Brogdon, who they said was a known as a carjacker, on Friday after he allegedly tried to steal another car. His mother is absolutely stunned.
"That's not him," said the woman, who did not want her name revealed. "That's not something he would do. That's stone crazy."
Police say Brogdon is the man seen on a surveillance videotape which shows a man stealing Beverly Ferguson's van last Monday with her two young sons inside, one only 2-years old. The carjacker drove more than 50-blocks before abandoning the van.
"That's crazy, I don't think he would ever do something to hurt someone," said his mother.
On Friday, Brogdon allegedly tried to steal a car, but it's owner took up the chase as he called for help.
"He jumped in the car, and drove off with the vehicle, being followed by the victim in another vehicle. The whole time he was on the phone with police
.until Brogdon crashed the vehicle," said Corporal Gerardo Delosrios, the lead investigator in the case.
The victim restrained Brogdon until police arrived. Delosrios said Brogdon confessed to taking Ferguson's van after she parked it at a store with her children inside it.
"During the course of the investigation he confessed that he did jump in the van with the children, but he didn't know they were in the van," he said. "He said he was worried there were so many police around, he didn't want to stop with the children."
Brogdon is charged with Grand Theft and Kidnapping.
