BSO Cracks Down On Broward Drug Dealing Operation

Crime Stopper Tips Contributed To A Number Of Arrests

Police Ask Anyone With Information To Call (954) 493-TIPS

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― A ring of dangerous drug dealers who had control of the south end of Broward County, has been removed from the streets and are in police custody thanks to "Operation Dirty South."

The six-month operation by the Broward Sheriff's Office targeted drug dealers in the southern end of the county. It led to 34 arrests and the confiscation of sixteen guns, along with $80,000 worth of cocaine and crack, said Sheriff Al Lamberti on Friday.

He added that of the 16 guns captured, a couple of them were "cop killing guns. "Two of them were FHN 57's, which fire an armor-piercing round, pretty scary."

"We feel very safe in Dania Beach now," said Lisa Young, a community activist in Dania Beach. "It was very scary to hear about in the beginning because you don't think of it on a day to day basis, and here they are right in front of us on the streets."

The initial intent was to get drug dealers off the streets, but the operation expanded when investigators learned suspected drug thugs were planning a deadly armored car robbery, but the plan was foiled before it happened.

"The plan was to execute the money carrier that exited the back of the truck," said Sergeant Ed Grant of BSO. "Once that was done, they planned to take over the truck and hold the driver."

Operation Dirty South went from May until November of last year. Sheriff Lamberti commented that as BSO, Hollywood police and federal agents began making arrests, suspects began to turn on one another other.

"Let me tell you how violent they were," the sheriff stated. "When we started making arrests, some of the other members still out there got so paranoid, they started plotting to kill each other to avoid being snitched on."

"You're not welcome here and if you are in here, that well find you that well let you know where the door is and what door you can open up and get into and that will be the Broward County sheriff's office jail.

The operation also used undercover surveillance and Crime Stoppers tips to narrow in on the drug dealers.
