Gov. Crist To Witness Release Of Pregnant Manatee

"Patsy" Has Recuperated From Surgery At The Miami Seaquarium

Flipper Was Heavily Entangled With Fishing Line

Rescued Off Key Largo
HOMESTEAD (CBS4) ― A six-year old pregnant manatee, who has been recuperating from life-saving surgery at the Miami Seaquarium will be released back into the wild Friday and her release will be overseen by Governor Charlie Crist.

Gov. Crist is scheduled to join officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission for the release of Patsy, who was found entangled in fishing line in Key Largo on April 29th.

Patsy will be released Friday afternoon at Convoy Point in Biscayne National Park in Homestead.

When Patsy was first rescued, wildfire experts didn't realize she was a momma-to-be until they brought her back to the Seaquarium for surgery to remove the fishing line which was entangled around one of her fins.

Now, after plenty of TLC, the 1,000 pound manatee will go back to the wild where she's expected to deliver her calf this summer.

When fishing, always remember to throw away fishing line on land and not in the water to protect manatees and other marine life.
