First African-American Woman Chief Justice In Fla.

TALLAHASSEE (CBS News) ―

Justice Peggy Quince, 60, will be the Florida Supreme Court's first African-American female chief justice on July 1st.

Justice Quince was elected by her six fellow justices for the rotating, two-year post of chief justice, the court announced Friday. Her term will begin on July 1. 

Her professional career began with an undergraduate degree from Howard University in 1970 and a law degree from the Catholic University of America in 1975. 

She was appointed to the Second District Court of Appeal in 1993, becoming the first African-American woman appointed to any of the state's five lower appellate courts, and appointed to the state Supreme Court in 1998-99, where she became the first African-American woman to sit on the state's highest court and the third female justice.
