Two Pit Bulls Euthanized After Deadly Attack

Broward County Animal Control Declared The Dogs "Dangerous"

Owner Of The Pit Bulls Did Not Appeal Decision

Dogs Killed A Yorkie, Mauled A 2nd Dog And Bit Woman In The Face
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Nearly two weeks after a Fort Lauderdale woman and her small terrier were viciously attacked by two pit bulls in her Fort Lauderdale neighborhood, Broward County animal control officials have declared the dogs "dangerous" and the dogs were euthanized on Tuesday.

The pit bulls, a male named Bobby and a female named Shelbi, had been in the custody of Broward animal control officials since the attack on Wednesday, May 20th. That's when Kailen Gonzalez and her brother Carlos were walking three small dogs in their Victoria Park neighborhood when the two pit bulls charged out of their backyard.

The dogs attacked Kailen and two of the dogs. Her Jack Russell Terrier named Milo was injured, a Silky Terrier named Bella was killed and Kailen was bitten in the face while she tried to protect the dogs. Carlos and a third dog were not hurt.

Broward's dangerous-dog ordinance permits officials to "dispose" of a dangerous dog in a humane manner if it attacks without provocation and seriously injures a person or causes the death of a domestic animal.

The dogs' owner Katarzyna Zalewski, who had the right to appeal the decision, decided not to do so, according to Lisa Mendheim, spokeswoman for the Animal Care and Regulation Division.

Zalewski was also fined $270 for lacking county pet licenses and rabies vaccination records for her dogs, Mendheim said.
