Used Ambulance Sold With Used Syringes

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) ― A used ambulance recently purchased by a Pompano Beach company had scattered inside a container filled with used syringes, used rubber gloves and other used medical equipment. It was bought from the Riviera Beach Fire Department through an Internet company that later refunded his money.

Steve Siegel bought the used ambulance for a marketing tool for his medical company.

"Anyone in medicine knows there's state and federal laws about the disposal of syringes governing this," Siegel told CBS4 Carey Codd.

Worst among the medical waste was a blanket with what he believed was blood.

"There's a rag that looks like - and I'm not an expert - that looks like it's blood with mold on it. If that's the case, that needs to be addressed," he explained.

The ambulance has been sitting at Siegel's mechanic since he bought it from PropertyRoom.com, which is an auction website for law enforcement vehicles and seized items.  He asked how an ambulance could be sold to anyone in this condition.

"I spoke to the City of Riviera Beach about this. They admit they left syringes inside a container in here, but they say there's nothing inside this ambulance that is hazardous to anyone's health. The city tells me they made a mistake but says they learned a big lesson."

Health officials said no laws were broken.
