Road Rage Incident Ends In Death

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― A case of South Florida road rage has led to a man's death and another man behind bars charged with murder. BSO considers this case not only a terrible case of road rage but it's also considered a hate crime.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, 49-year old Hygens Labidou of Wellington was driving a flatbed truck in the area of 1825 S. Powerline Road in Deerfield Beach on Thursday December 13.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m. on that day, Labidou was driving behind a pickup truck. Detectives say Steven Lonzisero, 43, and his 15 year old daughter were both in the pickup truck along with 28-year old Edward Borrowsky.

BSO states that the driver of the pickup truck slammed on the brakes, apparently upset that Labidou may have been tailgating. The two men in the pickup truck, Lonzisero and Borrowsky both exited their vehicle and one of them was holding a knife. They were reportedly yelling racial slurs at Labidou.

Fearing for his life, Labidou reached for a gun and started firing at the two men. Police said he fired a total of seven shots and had a permit for his gun. Both Lonzisero and Borrowsky were hit twice. Borrowsky was struck in the leg and in the back. Lonzisero was struck in the arm and leg.

"Lonzisero and Borrowsky were pounding on Labidou's truck, they were shouting obscenities racial obscenities profanities," Mike Jachles of BSO told CBS4's Tiffani Helberg. "This man [Labidou] was clearly in fear for his life and felt like he had no other options than to use his legally-permanent hand gun, firing several shots to defend himself sticking both men.

Both were hospitalized but Borrowsky died of his injuries. Lonzisero, now out of the hospital, has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and hate crime charges.

According to some tapes Labidou called 911 immediately to report what had happened.
