Carvalho Contract Pulled From School Board Agenda

Contract Was To Be Reviewed & Ratified Wednesday

Miami-Dade Schools Have Been Struggling Under The Strain Of State Budget Cuts And Declining Enrollment

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The absence of a Miami-Dade School Board attorney and one board member forced the delay of a vote to ratify the contract of new Superintendent Alberto Carvalho on Wednesday.

Alberto Carvalho was appointed in a 5-3 vote last week, immediately after the board voted to buy out Dr. Rudy Crew's contract for $368,000 in order to end his tenure with the district. Crew's final day on the job was Friday, the same day Carvalho announced he was accepting the job offer.

On Wednesday, Carvalho was still being referred to as the acting superintendent by some board members. "By virtue of the vote we had last week, we have an acting superintendent and I am committed to working with our acting superintendent," said Miami-Dade School Board member Renier de la Portilla.

Carvalho previously told CBS4 that his contract would be for less money than the $325,000 a year paid to Crew and would be for fewer years than the four-year deal Crew negotiated.
The proposed deal—sources tell CBS4 News—would pay Carvalho between $250 and $350 thousand annually on a two to three year contract deal with options to renew annually after that.

"I maintain my support of Mr. Carvalho and will bring his contract to the board by the October meeting," Miami-Dade school board Chairman Augustin Barrera said.

The school board members that are not content with Carvalho's appointment say the problem isn't so much with him, as it is with the rushed way in which he was named.

"All interested applicants will have an opportunity to apply, and Mr. Carvalho will have time to clear up his good name," said school board member Marta Perez.

Until then, the tension will continue to simmer between those board members who supported the buyout of Rudy Crew's contract, and those who wanted Crew to stay.
