Drunk Driver Blamed For Multi-Vehicle Crash On 826

Driver Identified As Shanna Clayton

She Faces 10 Charges Including DUI & Driving With Suspended License

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) ―

A 24-year old woman faces nearly a dozen charges including DUI in connection with a multi-vehicle crash on the Palmetto Expressway Friday morning in Miami Gardens. The accident led to the shutdown of the on-ramp to the eastbound Palmetto at NW 17th Avenue. The on-ramp has reopened.

According to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Pat Santangelo, Shanna Clayton was in a silver Jetta when she slammed into a white Nissan in the eastbound lanes of the Palmetto approaching NW 17th Avenue around 5:00 a.m.

The Nissan jumped the concrete barrier and rolled over onto 167th Street. A woman in the Nissan was seriously hurt and was pinned inside her car.

"That person was severely pinned inside the car and technical rescue units and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had to use the Jaws of Life to take the roof of the car, to take the female out of the vehicle," said Lieutenant Arnold Piedrahita of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.  She was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with severe injuries.

The accident caused a secondary crash involving a school bus and a black Scion. The driver of the school bus took evasive action following the first crash but lost control of the bus and also went down an embankment, hit the black Scion, drove through a fence, before crashing into the vacant Modernage building, located at 1200 NW 167th Street. The bus crashed through a large garage door at the warehouse portion of the building.

There were no children on the bus. The two occupants of the school bus and the driver of one of the other vehicles were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.  The bus driver was released in the early afternoon.

Shanna Clayton, the driver believed to have caused the crash, was treated and released on the scene. She was taken into police custody and has been charged with ten counts, including DUI and Driving with a Suspended License.

"Well unfortunately in Miami-Dade County about 40-percent of all the traffic fatalities and serious crashes we have are DUI related," said Lieutenant Pat of The Florida Highway Patrol.
