DNA Links To Local Man In Serial Rape Case

DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4) ― Police say they have arrested a former college star athlete in Deerfield Beach for allegedly committing multiple rapes in Broward County and the state of Illinois.

After 15 years of allegedly assaulting his first victim, it took the use of DNA evidence technology and the work of Broward Sheriff's Office Detective Eric Hendel to arrest 38-year-old Steven Feagin of Deerfield Beach.

The BSO got on the case in 2007, while responding to a rape in Pompano Beach. In this incident the woman says she awoke when a man entered her bedroom and put a rag with chemicals to her face. She then told police she awoke while a man raped her repeatedly in her home before he left through the front door. Evidence from the scene was collected and a DNA profile was entered into a system called the national Combined DNA Indexing System (CODIS).

In August 2008, that same DNA profile revealed that the same man who raped this Pompano woman also has the same DNA that matches three cases in Illinois, one from 1993, and two from 1995. In these cases the victims were raped at gunpoint. All the victims were women with blonde hair and either blue or green eyes.

Detective Hendel then started to work in conjunction with the Urbana, Illinois Police Department to figure out who the suspect is, narrowing their list from 30,000 people to 54 suspects. They eventually located Feagin, who was a star athlete and scholarship student who attended the University of Illinois from 1991 to 1995. A sample of Feagin's DNA matched the DNA taken as evidence at the crime scenes.

Feagin was currently residing in Deerfield Beach.
