Trekkies Gather At Ft. Lauderdale IMAX
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
Fans of the Star Trek movie are heading to theatres in South Florida to see the phenomenon for themselves, and while the new movie takes fans back to the beginning of the Star Ship Enterprise, it also continues to teach everyone a lesson in acceptance.
The new Star Trek Movie, serves as a prequel to the other movies and, of course, the countless other television series. Fans can see a young Spock and Captain Kirk before they boarded the star ship Enterprise, and for South Florida Trekkies, it means everything.
"This means you humans get to see what we Vulcans were like when we were like from the beginning," said one fan, as he spoke to CBS4's Jorge Estevez, in character, dressed as a Vulcan.
Many fans head to these movies in costume as a way to connect with each other and the characters, but for the fans who scored a ticket to the premiere at the Auto Nation IMAX theater in Fort Lauderdale, the movie is an event.
"This is going to be an awesome movie," shouted one fan, as he made his way into the theater for the first of two showings.
Fans had been waiting years for this revival of Star Trek, which is more than just a movie. The original series and countless television shows are part of a cultural phenomenon that has taught us all about equality.
"On the show you have every kind of gender and race. Anything you can imagine is there, so people can learn from this," said one fan, who hopes to see another Star Trek movie really soon.
