West Boca Teen Dies After Breast Surgery

BOCA RATON (CBS4) ― A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday for a West Boca Raton High School Senior who died from complications after undergoing breast augmentation surgery.

The mass for 18-year old Stephanie Kuleba will take place at 10am at St. Jude Catholic Church, 21689 Toledo Road, west of Boca Raton.

Officials have not released an official cause of death, however, her family says she suffered a severe reaction to anesthesia given to her during the procedure on Friday.

Roberto Stanziale, the family's attorney, said "It doesn't matter if it was or was not a vanity issue, taken the fact that she shouldn't have died during this procedure."

After paramedics arrived at the office of board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephen Schuster, located at 1905 Clint Moore Road, she was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where she died Saturday morning.

Dr. Schuster is a member of  the American Society of Plastic Surgery and a faculty member at the University of Mami School of Medicine. His office referred all calls to his attorney, who did not return CBS4 phone calls.

Dayna Mercer, a fellow student, said "She was just a wonderful person. She was smart, and had a lot of talent."  Alessa Creamer, another friend  commented, "She could brighten up your entire day."

Friends and family held a candlelight vigil for Kuleba Sunday night. She was captain of the varsity cheerleading squad, had a near perfect grade-point average and was recently accepted to the University of Florida where she wanted to study to be a doctor.
