A halo around the sun startled some people throughout the Florida Keys on Tuesday.
CBS4 received a large number of phone calls from viewers who wanted to know why there was a prism-like halo around the sun, as seen in this picture taken in Islamorada.
The rare corona, seen from Key Largo to Key West, was created by the refraction of light through multiple layers of ice crystal clouds in the upper levels of the atmosphere, according to meteorologists at the Key West National Weather Service Office.
It's also called a "halo" and it has nothing to do with the smoke that has been billowing on and off for two days from brush fires in Northwest Miami-Dade.
