When smoke filled the home at 8705 NW 57 Dr. in Tamarac, the family who lives there was not home; their cats, however, were. Seven adult cats and four kittens were trapped inside when the fire broke out.
Tamarac Fire Rescue found the cats and quickly treated them with oxygen at the scene; then they were rushed to Coral Springs Animal Hospital.
"At this point they are suffering from smoke inhalation," explained Dr. Krystal Hardy. "There's a lot of soot that goes into the nasal cavity and then the lungs themselves."
Right now, the cats are on IV drips and in oxygen tents. "Animals don't do well with stress," said Sharon Jacobson from The Clydey Foundation, a group to help animals who's families can't afford to pay medical bills. The Clydey Foundation donated $1,500 to help offset the medical bills. "The quicker we get them better, the better off they'll be and then we can get them into loving homes.
The people who own the home that caught on fire cannot afford to treat the cats, so they have given them up and are hoping they will go to good homes.
