Teacher's Alleged Killer Will Not Be Charged

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) ― The widow of a murdered Braddock High School teacher fears for her life, as the former suspect is being let free.

Lemroy Lawrence was killed as he went out to his car in his front yard in Miami Gardens two years ago. He was shot and died at a local hospital. The former suspect lived just blocks away from the teacher.

"It's the right guy," said the widow, who didn't want us to show her face or name for fear of retaliation. "My gut feeling is telling me that."

A week after the murder, police arrested 17-year-old Rubin Herrera Jiro and charged him with the crime. Three witnesses pointed to Jiro, but last fall they changed their story.

"I believed they changed their story because, about two, three months ago he was let out on probation, and then he got put back in because he got back into trouble," said the widow. "I believe he got to those witnesses and threatened them."

Robert Barrar, Jiro's defense attorney, said, "Rubin has always stated from day one that he didn't kill this man and had nothing to do with it."

Barrar says he believes he knows who killed the teacher and says authorities are investigating.
