The judge in the case of seven men accused of plotting to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower will hear motions from each of the defendants Friday asking for acquittal based on lack of evidence.
Thursday, federal prosecutors rested in the trial of so called "Liberty City 7". The seven men are accused of plotting to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower and bomb FBI offices in several cities in hopes of sparking an armed insurrection against the U.S. government.
The federal case is based largely on testimony of two paid FBI informants and dozens of audio and video recordings. The case took about five weeks to present to jurors.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Arango announced the end of the main prosecution case after introducing records showing that four members of the group had applied for state security guard licenses. Prosecutors say they wanted to use those licenses to obtain weapons.
The seven defendants face up to 70 years in prison if convicted of all four charges.
