Grandmother Prevents Granddaughter's Abduction

CORAL SPRINGS (CBS4) ― A Coral Springs teen was arrested after he allegedly tried to kidnap an 11-year-old girl from her home, and thwarted after the girl's grandmother interrupted the abduction, in which the teen then fled.

Timothy Schlafer, 18, allegedly broke into the 11-year old girl's home in the 8700 block of NW 40th Street and picked her up from her bed where she was sleeping, according to a police report.

The grandmother, Mary Cimino, told CBS4 Joan Murray, that she shares a room with her granddaughter. "I ran down after him, and when he got to the front door, and I said, 'put her down'".  She added,"He had a knife, which he could have used on me."

The mother recalled, "She (daughter) was sleeping and he just came in and told her to be quiet, that he was taking her out of the house."

The young girl said the suspect told her, "When he picked me up, he said I was to be quiet. When he came downstairs, he said don't throw up.  He rubbed my belly."

Schlafer was arrested a short time later on an abandoned golf course. Neither the grandmother nor the girl was injured in the incident.

Schlafer was arrested and charged with armed kidnapping of a child under 13 years of age and armed burglary.

Police said the girl and her family did not know Schlafer before the incident and believe there may be other children out there he may have tried to abduct.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kim Eveker at (954) 346-1388.
