No Bond For Teen Accused Of Trying To Kidnap Girl

Tim Schlafer Is Charged With Confining A Child Under 13

CORAL SPRINGS (CBS4) ― A Broward judge on Thursday has denied bond for a Coral Springs teen accused of trying to kidnap a girl while she slept.

The lawyer of Timothy Schlafer, 18, explained to the judge, "I respectfully request you reduce that bond.  This child, Timothy, is an honor student and has a scholarship to FAU and has substantial ties to the community.  His parents are here at this time. We do request this court set bond."

The judge replied, "Based on the safety of the community, he'll be held on no bond on both counts, thank you."

Schlafer is charged with confining a child under 13 without consent of a parent, and armed burglary. He made a brief appearance in bond court.

The classmates who spoke to CBS4 News said they were shocked or didn't think that he was the type of student who would engage in such behavior. He played junior varsity and varsity football.

"Her really wasn't the type of person that you would think, like, would just come in somebody's home. He was a laid back kid, made jokes every once in a while, kept to himself," said one student.

Schlafer allegedly broke into a townhouse in 8700 block of NW 40th Street around 2 a.m. Wednesday. After taking a knife from the kitchen he reportedly made his way to a bedroom where the girl and her grandmother were sleeping. The girl's mother said after he picked her up "he told her to be quiet, that he was taking her out of the house."

"When he picked me up, he said I was to be quiet. When he came downstairs, he said don't throw up. He rubbed my belly," said the 11-year old girl.

The girl's grandmother Mary Cimino heard the commotion and confronted Schlafter at the bottom of the townhome's staircase.

"I ran down after him and when he got to the front door I said, 'put her down'. He had a knife, which he could have used on me."

After screaming at him to drop her granddaughter, Cimino said Schlafer put the girl on the floor, dropped the knife on the staircase and ran out of the house.

He was arrested a short time later on a nearby golf course. Neither the grandmother nor the girl was injured in the incident.

Police said the girl and her family did not know Schlafer before the incident and believe there may be other children out there he may have tried to abduct.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kim Eveker at (954) 346-1388.
