Major construction will shutdown all southbound lanes of the Don Shula Expressway for the fourth consecutive night. At 9 p.m. Thursday, SR-874 southbound will completely close between Kendall Drive and Northwest 107th Avenue. Traffic will return to the normal pattern Friday morning at 5:30 a.m.
The closure ran about 15 minutes late on Thursday morning and as a result officials at the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority have assured CBS 4 that they will make every attempt possible to wrap early or on time Friday morning.
Construction crews are trying to get as much work completed as possible before the big NASCAR weekend in Homestead. On Friday, it's the Ford 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship followed by the Ford 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship on Saturday. The big race weekend wraps up on Sunday with the Ford 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship.
With names like Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty coming to town, all 67 thousand seats of the Homestead Speedway are expected to be filled. The Don Shula Expressway will see heavier traffic in both directions all weekend long. To accomodate the added drivers on SR-874, construction has been postponed.
MDX officials say construction on the Don Shula Expressway is necessary for safety and capacity improvements from 117th Avenue to Kendall Drive. Crews are also revamping the Killian Interchange.
"Construction began in November of 2008. To date the installation of the sound barrier walls between SW 117th Avenue and SW 88th Street has been completed and the bridge over SW 112th Street was widened," said Mario Diaz with the MDX. "Construction crews have now started work on widening the entrance and exit ramps at SW 104th Street, as well as widening the Killian Parkway Bridge over SR-874. Currently the project is on schedule for completion in the spring of 2011."
